Conclusion
Am I at Risk for Radon-Induced Lung Cancer?
For the residents of Eastern Washington, the data shows that the
residents of Spokane, Pend Oreille, Stevens, and Whitman counties have
average radon levels exceeding the EPA's recommended level of 4 pCi/L.
Non-smokers living outside these counties are probably not receiving
significant damage from radon in their homes. For the residents of those
counties exceeding the EPA's recommended level, there are a couple of
variables that you must weigh before making a decision:- Am I
exposed to first or second-hand smoke in my home?
- Do I spend a
significant amount of time in the lowest levels of the house?
- Do you
believe the EPA's level of 4pCi/L is too low or high?
Since the variables are so numerous, drawing conclusions
about the risk of radon may never reveal more than the EPA's
county-by-county estimates. Every expert agrees that there is no
conclusive way to identify whether a home has a radon problem or not
without on-site testing.
