The American Prospect Writing Fellows program offers emerging journalists the opportunity to spend two years at The American Prospect magazine in Washington, D.C., to develop their journalistic skills. A passion for politics, policy and digital journalism is a prerequisite. Fellows must make a one-year commitment to the program. Program fellows and permanent staff at the magazine then determine whether to continue participation for a second year.

The CBYX for Young Professionals is a fellowship of the U.S. Department of State and the German Bundestag. Annually 75 American and 75 German young professionals, ages 18.5-24, spend one year in each other's countries, studying, interning, and living with hosts on a cultural immersion program. Fellows will participate in a German Language Phase (Aug-Sept), a Study Phase (Oct-Jan) at a German university or technical college, and an Internship Phase (Feb-June) to gain work experience in Germany.

The InterExchange Foundation Christianson Grant provides awards of up to $10,000 to motivated young Americans who create and carry out their own meaningful service projects abroad. Past grantees’ projects have focused on multiple international issues, including public health, environmental conservation, legal advocacy, women’s and girls’ rights, microfinance, education, and poverty alleviation, among other topics. Grantees share their experiences via regular blog posts about their project and a completion report in order to further international understanding and promote cultural awareness. Projects should focus on an issue and a region of the world about which applicants are passionate, and should showcase specific skill-sets and the tangible, sustainable contributions to be made to a community abroad. Proposed programs must be at least six months in length and emphasize a work, internship, and/or volunteer component. Grant applicants must be U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents between the ages of 18 and 28.

This programme aims to deepen knowledge of the German language (general language, technical language) and regional studies. DDCSP is a multi-summer, experiential learning program for undergraduates that explores conservation in the areas of climate, water, food, and ecosystems. DDCSP helps emerging conservation leaders to develop unique perspectives and skills by connecting them to conservation, biodiversity, environmental justice, and community programs and initiatives. Whitman College students are eligible to apply to the DDCSP programs at the University of California Santa Cruz and Yale School for the Environment.

The Pre-Doctoral Fellowships are paid, two-year research awards in six scientific sub-specialties for college graduates who will dedicate two years to research in autism prior to entering graduate studies. Fellows will participate in and guide innovative research as well as work with children and families affected by autism. Fellows will receive mentorship from program directors and Marcus Autism Center faculty members. A summer training seminar will cover clinical research in ASD, ASD grand rounds meetings, social neuroscience lab meetings, training tutorials in relevant statistical software, and ongoing practica. The six sub-specialties are:

  • Cohen Fellowship in Developmental Social Neuroscience. Involves cutting-edge social neuroscience research in infants, toddlers, and adolescents. Fellows will work to further the understanding of autism through eye-tracking research and project guidance from the point of data collection to publication of results.
  • Simons Fellowship in Computational Neuroscience. Involves integrating computational strategies with clinical research goals. Fellows develop methods for analysis of visual scanning and eye-tracking data, computational models of visual salience, and data visualization techniques, all with the aim of advancing the understanding of autism and efforts at early diagnosis.
  • Marcus Fellowship in Speech Science and Engineering. Involves research in early vocal development, including speech production and speech perception, as part of a program to map out typical and atypical development of spoken communication in early childhood.
  • Education Sciences Fellowship. Involves research in educational innovations in autism, from early child care through high school. Fellows will learn about classroom-based interventions to increase social emotional engagement and inclusion, gaining experiences with observational research methods, cutting-edge intervention research, and implementation science approaches.
  • Clinical Research Fellowship. Involves in-depth clinical and research experience through work with infants, toddlers, and school-aged children spanning the full autism spectrum. Fellows will learn assessment measures across a variety of domains commonly used for clinical an diagnostic characterization of autism and related disorders.

Funded by the U.S. Department of State, the FAIT Fellowship is a two-year fellowship that will set recipients on a path to a career in the Foreign Service by providing academic funding for an IT-related degree, internships, professional development and mentorship---culminating in an appointment in the Foreign Service as a Diplomatic Technology Officer (DTO). There is a minimum five-year service commitment in the Department of State's Foreign Service Officer Program. Fellows complete two internships: one in the U.S. State Departments and one overseas at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

The Fulbright Canada-Mitacs Globalink Internship Program provides high performing U.S. students with the opportunity to be part of a 10 to 12-week summer research internship under the supervision of Canadian university faculty members in a variety of academic disciplines, from science, engineering and mathematics to the humanities and social sciences. Students will be given the opportunity to take part in professional training as well as extensive opportunity for cultural, social, and recreational experiences. Global Health Corps offers a one-year paid fellowship in which fellows make a significant, measurable contribution to a partner organization in the U.S. and its target population. GHC recruits partner organizations involved in healthcare access and positive health outcomes for the poor. Candidates apply for specific positions with one of Global Health's partner organizations for which they have relevant skills and experience. Fellows are selected jointly by GHC and the partner organization.

The IRT program is designed for college juniors and seniors, recent graduates, and working professionals who want to continue their graduate education in the humanities, social sciences, and education.

IRT addresses lack of diversity in the nation's teaching faculties by recruiting outstanding students and other scholars committed to diversity. IRT sponsors a summer workshop for students who apply to the program during their junior or senior year of college. Participants engage in a graduate-level curriculum of critical, cultural, and educational theory during an intense four-week program in July. IRT also selects approximately 90 outstanding students to enroll in its Associate Program, which is open to juniors, seniors, recent graduates, and working professionals.

The McCall MacBain Scholarship enables students to pursue a fully funded master’s or professional degree at McGill University while connecting with mentors and participating in an intensive leadership development program, providing students with the interdisciplinary learning and global community they need to accelerate their impact on the world. Located in Montréal, McGill is a top research university offering over 400 graduate and professional programs across 80+ departments.  McCall MacBain Scholars will join a community of peers selected for their entrepreneurial spirit, breadth and depth of interests, problem-solving ability, willingness to take meaningful risks, and exceptional character. Twenty full scholarships are offered annually, with nearly 60 other awards being offered during the interview process.

The aim of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) of Japan is to foster educational ambassadors who will become bridges of friendship between the scholarship recipient's country and Japan through study in Japan. These ambassadors will contribute to the development of both countries and the world in general. MEXT offers scholarships to international teachers who wish to conduct research on school education at designated Japanese universities as Teacher Training Students. Applicants must be graduates of universities or teacher training schools and have worked as teachers at primary/secondary educational institutions or teacher training schools (excluding universities) in their home countries for five years or more in total.

Also established under MEXT, the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) offers scholarship programs for international students. The purpose of these programs is to foster the development of creative individuals who, rich in humanism, will become the leaders of society in the next generation, at the same time it promotes international understanding and exchange. Most scholarships provided through JASSO are targeted for undergraduate and graduate students at universities.

The National Geographic Society’s Grants Program provides seed funding and support to early career individuals, as well as those more advanced in their careers, who are working to address critical challenges, advance new solutions, and inspire positive transformation across all seven continents. The NCAA awards up to 126 postgraduate scholarships annually.  The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are at least in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition.

The one-time non-renewable scholarships are awarded three times a year corresponding to each sport season (fall, winter and spring).  Each sports season there are 21 scholarships available for men and 21 scholarships available for women for use in an accredited graduate program.

The ongoing commitment to excellence of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi is reflected in its grants and awards programs. The society awards 54 fellowships of $8,500, six fellowships of $20,000, and two fellowships of $35,000 to members entering their first year of graduate or professional study. Applications are submitted to the local chapter officer for consideration by the society. Each Phi Kappa Phi chapter may select one candidate from its applicant pool to compete for society-wide awards. Selection is based on the applicant's preparation for and promise of success in graduate or professional study as well as acceptance at an approved graduate or professional program.

The Rolex Scholarship provides a hands-on introduction to underwater and other aquatic-related endeavors for a young person considering a career in an underwater-related discipline. The range of experiences may include active participation in field studies, underwater research, scientific expeditions, laboratory assignments, equipment testing and design, photographic instruction, and other specialized assignments.

Funded by Samvid Ventures, the scholarship will empower future leaders and changemakers by providing financial support for graduate study as well as leadership training.
