Japan Exchange and Teaching Program (JET)

Eligibility requirements:
• U.S. citizen, international students
• bachelor's degree or higher by start of program
• less than six years of residence in Japan during the 10-year period prior to departure year
• commitment to maintain relations with Japan after completion of program
• high level of Japanese language skills
• good health
Award summary and conditions: The Japan Exchange and Teaching Program (JET) fosters internationalization in Japan by promoting mutual understanding between the people of Japan and those of other countries. The program enhances foreign language education and promotes international exchange at the local level through ties between Japanese youth and foreign youth. JET program participants serve in local authorities as well as in public and private elementary, junior and senior high schools in Japan.

• applicant report of medical condition
• statement of purpose (two-page essay, double-spaced, 1-inch margins, 12-point font)
• official transcript(s)
• certification of graduation or proof of expected graduation
• proof of U.S. citizenship
• teaching or language proficiency (for students with these types of qualifications; e.g., TEFL/TESL/TESOL/JLPT)
• criminal record (if applicable)
• certificate of health (for students who indicate an interest in early arrival)
• letters of reference (2)*
