Club Sports at Whitman
Join the Team!
Club Sports at Whitman are student-led teams that compete against other colleges and universities. They offer a high level of competition and often involve regular practices, coaching, and travel for games and tournaments. If you’re looking for a team experience outside of varsity athletics, club sports are a great fit!
Alpine Ski Team
The Whitman Alpine Ski Team has been a part of Whitman’s campus community since the 1930s. Today, as a club sport, the team is completely student-run. It is a co-ed team of around 20-25 athletes each season who compete in the United States Collegiate Ski & Snowboard Association (USCSA) Pacific Northwest conference.
The combined achievements of the over 400 alumni who raced for Whitman include:
- 1 Olympic Bronze Medal
- 6 World University Game Berths
- 16 USCSA National Championships
- 85 Academic All-Americans in USCSA and NCAA Division I
- 269 All-Americans in USCSA and NCAA Division I
The team's schedule consists of 8 conference races throughout 4 weekends starting in January, followed by regional and national competitions held at various locations across the country.
Additionally, once a year the team offers a weekend training with the local ski resort, Bluewood. A great opportunity for racers to touch up on their skills or learn how to run slalom and giant slalom courses.
While no racing experience is needed to join the club, the team does require you to be confident in your skiing.
This team is a close-knit group with a lifelong love for snow and skiing!
Climbing Team
The Whitman College Climbing Team is an officially sanctioned club sports team. They are committed to improving the technical and physical climbing abilities of all their athletes.
During their training season, which starts fall semester, they divide into three training teams (the beginning/intermediate team, the advanced team, and the open team). Climbers are placed with the team that best fits their strength and climbing abilities allowing climbers to train with a group that best caters towards their level.
During their competitive season, the training teams merge. They practice during the week and travel to competitions over the weekends competing in the Northwest Collegiate Climbing Circuit (NC3) and the USA Climbing Collegiate Climbing Series (CCS). Many members of their team start out their climbing careers with the climbing team so don’t be shy to sign up.
Also, keep in mind, that many members of their team choose not to compete. The climbing team is a very supportive environment that fosters individuals of all climbing backgrounds and abilities to achieve their best.
Club Softball
The Whitman College Club Softball looks to provide a fun, safe, and competitive environment for students to play softball. They encourage anyone who wants to play to join (regardless of previous experience).
Co-Ed Club Volleyball
The Whitman College Co-ed Indoor Volleyball Team welcomes all genders to play! They practice 2-3 times a week in the multi-purpose gym and compete against local men’s teams and at the YMCA in Walla Walla.
They hold tryouts at the beginning of the academic year and typically re-evaluate their roster after winter break.
In addition to their competition team practices, they offer more laid-back open gym sessions for less experienced players to anyone who wants to join in and have some fun!
Cycling Team
The Whitman Cycling Team is a student-run club sport providing recreational and competitive cycling opportunities. Walla Walla provides them with long country roads that see little car traffic and are great for training. Those who race, do so in the spring semester against other collegiate teams in the Northwest Collegiate Cycling Conference and local riders!
The Cycling Team strives to be an inclusive and welcoming environment for students of all backgrounds and abilities. Team members are expected to show respect to everyone else on the Team regardless of race, color, national origin, class, gender, sexual orientation, religion, creed, or the presence of any disability.
They normally meet on the weekends for team rides during the fall and three times a week in the spring for training.
Gender Diverse Ultimate
The Gender Diverse Sweets Ultimate team is a group of goofers who love to play D3 frisbee at the intersection of competition and fun. They love to grind through challenges that take mental and physical grit and then shake it out on the dance floor afterward. In the fall you can find them playing pick-up on Ankeny while jammin’ to some tunes - join them in play! No experience necessary!
During the fall they compete in some tournaments on the west coast and against other college teams. But after winter break their competitive season begins. They travel to several more tournaments that count towards their national standing. The tournaments usually end around the beginning of April and then go off to the series (sectionals, regionals, nationals).
The GD Sweets strives to be an inclusive and welcoming space for all women and nonbinary individuals. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to captains!
Men’s Ultimate
The Men’s Ultimate team is an enthusiastic group that is always ready to throw a disc around an open field. They pride themselves on getting to the endzone and delivering some impressive layouts while scoring goals. Followed by some cheeky celebrations that no one does better than them.
Join the Men’s Ultimate team and flick away with the best, you’re sure to improve your sidearm, pancake catches and celebrations.
Nordic Ski Team
The Nordic Ski Team welcomes anyone who wants to join their club! Their members have a wide range of experience from members who have never put skis on before. To members who have skied their whole life and are seeking training partners. When you join the Nordic Ski team you’ll be sure to find the ski environment you’re looking for and enjoy the company around you.
The team looks to practice at least two to three times a week with low commitment to being at every practice. With competitions typically being community-held races.
Every Thanksgiving break you can find the Nordic Ski team in their weekend getaway to West Yellowstone for some training! Gear, transportation, housing, food – all the ingredients for a ski race weekend are provided, just bring yourself and enthusiasm for the sport.
