Whitman’s Intramural Sports Program hosts campus events and competitions throughout the school year—from flag football to basketball, from spikeball to pickleball, from soccer to sand volleyball, and more! Whether you’re in it to win or just here for the good times, intramurals are all about friendly competition, teamwork and making great memories.
Basketball
Is it in you? Intramural Basketball is a great way for new and experienced hoopers to display their skills!
There are two divisions: Division II, for players and teams looking for more casual play, and Division I, where players leave it all on the court to come out victorious.
The season runs from the start of the spring semester until spring break, ending with a playoff tournament that makes March Madness look like a 5th-grade rec league. Winners receive the patented Intramural Blue Shirts.
Games are played in the Multipurpose Gym in the Sherwood Center and run about 45 minutes long. Most games are played under the watchful eye and whistle of one of our well-trained Intramural Committee members. Whatever your skill level or passion for the game, Intramural Basketball is for you.
“I love IM Basketball because it's a great way of meeting new people, building community, and connecting with my good friends. “I’ve played in both DII and DI levels and have had a great experience in both- a nice, wide range of skill levels and competitiveness.”—Kai Alexander’26
Cornhole
A slow-paced game that involves patience, accuracy, and the vision to get a bean bag through a hole for maximum points.
Intramural Cornhole is a classic lawn game that keeps everyone on edge waiting to see if the bean bag will stay on the board.
Test your cornhole skills and enjoy the company of other Whitman community members that enjoy the friendly nature that cornhole brings to the lawn.
Dodgeball
Fun, fast-paced atmosphere where you are always Dodging, Ducking, Dipping, Diving, and Dodging!
The competitive atmosphere is laid back with a dash of energy allowing for the games to be self-refereed. Intramural Dodgeball is a fun and exciting way to take a study break, it creates the perfect place to hang out with friends and meet new people on campus!
Flag Football
Flag football is an age-old tradition at Whitman College. Alumni are known to look back on their attendance with fondness.
Intramural flag football brings in a large interest from the sorority and fraternity organizations. Creating a heavily attended event with plenty of people cheering and playing on the field.
There are no divisions in flag football, but players of any skill level are bound to have fun. The season runs after spring break to the end of the semester and features 1-2 games a week.
Those who want to be involved with flag football but can’t or don’t wish to play. Often coach a team, creating another fun avenue for participation.
Due to the high level of energy, this event brings on and off the field, we have paid student refs to officiate and place an emphasis on sportsmanship and safety.
Whether you’re on a quest for football greatness or looking to enjoy the warmer weather in a casual sport you can find both in this IM sport.
Intramural pickleball at colleges offers students an opportunity to engage in a fun, social, and low-pressure sport while fostering community interaction and physical activity.
This program is designed to accommodate all skill levels, from beginners to experienced players, and is an ideal way for students to stay active and connect with peers.
Sand Volleyball
Sand Volleyball is a fun, stress-free way to relax after classes have finished for the day. Every team has to have at least two girls playing at a time, which allows for a fun coed environment.
As spring starts, so does IM Sand Volleyball, it’s a great way to enjoy the Walla Walla sunshine while taking a break from studying for finals! Division I can be quite competitive for those who want to be challenged, but Division II offers a relaxed environment for those who just want to hit around a volleyball with their friends.
“It was fun participating in IM volleyball. I got to meet and play with different people I wouldn’t have met otherwise. Volleyball is one of the first sports I learned to play at Whitman and I am glad I have won at least once in my time here at Whitman”—Joseph Solis ’26
Soccer
Intramural soccer is a great way to spend the weekend with friends in either a relaxed or more competitive environment.
We host two divisions allowing for a wide range of skills and expertise levels. Both divisions have a kind of “pickup soccer” mentality, especially with the teams self-refereeing for most of the games.
However, for those hardcore soccer enthusiasts out there. Division I provides a competitive and skilled arena to play against other experienced players. The requirement for three female players to be on the field at any time creates a flashback of those younger coed soccer days, no matter which division you choose to play in.
Spike Ball
Intramural spikeball at Whitman College provides a perfect mix of exercise, social interaction, and competition, giving students the chance to unwind, make friends, and enjoy a sport that’s easy to pick up and play.
Whether you’re looking to compete or just have fun, it’s a great way to get involved and experience the Whitman community.
Table Tennis
Join us in this classic game that can be seen played in people’s garages, arcades, and even the Olympics.
IM Table Tennis is held during the winter months, allowing players to stay active and warm during the cold weather. This event features players from all sorts of athletic backgrounds. Witnessing these athletes and participants adjust to this smaller-fielded and technical sport adds to the entertainment.
The event takes place in Resident Halls, so there's always an audience of friends coming to cheer for their team and even enthusiasts passing by.
This event is usually a weekend tournament, consisting of doubles teams playing best of three and to twenty-one, winning by two.
Be sure to sign up! Paddles and tables are provided so just bring yourself!
Tennis
At IM Tennnis you'll find yourself surrounded by the Whitman community! Everyone there is excited to see some fun and exciting level of play.
Games are played between four players, typically lasting 30 min and played best of three (two sets, and a tiebreaker if needed). If the scoring system doesn't make sense, don't worry! There are IM committee members there to facilitate the event and walk you through the scoring system.
All the participants are there to enjoy themselves and take part of a timeless sport that is sure to make you run around the court.
At Whitman we have both indoor and outdoor tennis courts. So regardless of poor weather the games will go on! Prep your serve and get ready to rally!
