Sailing Within Sight of the Land: Technology and Japanese Relationships with the Sea in the Tokugawa Period with Professor of History Jakobina Arch

Whitman alumni, parents and friends are invited to a virtual lecture by Professor of History Jakobina "Bina" Arch on the construction style of Japanese ships during the Tokugawa period (1603-1868) and the coastal marine environment they were built to navigate, discussing how we can understand the particular relationship early-modern Japanese developed with different facets of their marine and terrestrial environments.

Protecting Firefighters, Protecting Public Health: Wildland Fire Hazards and Exposures

Whitman alumni, parents and friends are invited to a talk by Associate Professor of Sociology Alissa Cordner, sharing findings from her research with wildland firefighters. Since 2015, Dr. Cordner has worked with wildland firefighters to understand how they experience and understand the risks of their job. She will draw on examples from her research to describe the environmental and health hazards firefighters experience. She will describe how the current presence of public and environmental health in Whitman’s curriculum, and she will introduce plans for a new Public Health Program for future Whitman students.
Queer Advocacy and Activism Through Education and Law with Jane Carmody ’14 and the QLaw Foundation

Join Jane Carmody ’14 as she discusses the importance of local queer activism through the QLaw Foundation of Washington. The QLaw Foundation is the only legal organization doing policy advocacy work, legal clinics and legal trainings specifically centered around the issues and rights of 2SLGBTQIA+ Washingtonians. This virtual talk will touch on empowering communities in the ever changing landscape of federal and state governments.
