It's been a lively year in the study of art history and visual culture at Whitman. Highlights include visiting educators and alums who spoke on curating desert modernism, the experience of being a security guard at the Seattle Art Museum, and comic book art and environmental activism. Students traveled to New York City, Seattle, the Columbia River, Pendleton, and locally as part of their classroom learning. Seniors successfully presented research as part of their senior assessment, including the redevelopment of a Pasadena mall, the healing power of lynching memorials, and the eco-aesthetics of gated communities. We also inducted new teaching collections into the Penrose Archives, including material from artist Maya Lin's Pacific Northwest Confluence project and Prof. Uddin's history of American zoo design.
