Psychology major Nikki Antenucci '18 from Evergreen, Colorado, won the 2018 Governor's Civic Leadership Award for her commitment to community service. She was recognized at Campus Compact's Students Serving Washington Awards in March. Antenucci, whose studies focused on child development, social stigma, family dynamics and education, applied her skills by serving in local elementary school classrooms. She volunteered for America Reads/America Counts as a first grade tutor and special education assistant and took on a leadership role in Whitman Teaches the Movement, a program that trains Whitman students to teach civil rights lessons in Walla Walla public schools. As vice president of the Delta Gamma Foundation, Antenucci worked closely with United Blind of Walla Walla, organizing a campus lecture by Kirk Adams '83, president and CEO of the American Foundation for the Blind. Her next endeavor is Teach for America.
