Know Your Rights Training & Amplifying Voices of Disability
By Division of Inclusive Excellence
The Division of Inclusive Excellence remains committed to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility and antiracist practices. We want to encourage everyone to make time to participate in the Power and Privilege (P&P) Symposium next week. A general schedule for the symposium is available online.
Following P&P, there are two valuable learning opportunities available to the Whitman community you may want to have on your radar.
Know Your Rights With Colectiva Legal del Pueblo
Friday, Feb. 21, at 2 p.m. in Reid Campus Center, Young Ballroom (repeated at 6 p.m. in Spanish)
Colectiva Legal del Pueblo is a nonhierarchical collective organization founded for and by undocumented immigrants working to build community leadership and power for migrant justice through legal advocacy and education. Representatives from Colectiva will be on campus to provide a Know Your Rights workshop that helps to demystify the current immigration legal system, explain how to develop a family preparedness plan, provide guidance around relevant documents needed to fight a deportation case, and discuss ways to support a loved one in detention. They also address how to prepare for immigration raids and explain individual rights when approached, detained or incarcerated by police or immigration agents. Please contact diversity@whitman.edu with any questions about this workshop. (Flyer attached.)
Amplifying Voices of Disability
Thursday, Feb. 27, from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (not required to attend all sessions to register)
We also want to feature the Amplifying Voices of Disability virtual conference offered through Northern Arizona University. This virtual conference offers participants valuable information related to of-the-moment disability topics and includes a powerful lineup of activists and self-advocates. Topics include disabled parenting, service animals and emotional support animals, disability inclusion, disability and career preparation, and more. The Division of Inclusive Excellence is happy to sponsor people who are interested in participating in the virtual conference. We will cover the registration fee for up to 10 Whitman faculty, staff or students. Please contact diversity@whitman.edu to express interest in attending.
As we work to build a culture of accessibility, we continue to provide opportunities for learning and capacity building related to disability. In the weeks ahead, we will be providing the campus community with access to the Association for Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD) spring webinar series. Whitman is an institutional member of AHEAD, and webinar access will be provided in advance.
