Emily Somoskey is a 2-D mixed media artist and painter from Akron, Ohio. She pursued a bachelor's in art education/painting at The University of Akron in Akron, Ohio (2013) and her MFA at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan (2020). Somoskey also holds a certification in college teaching from Michigan State University. Using paint, collage and mixed-media, Somoskey's current work explores the ways we simultaneously experience physical and mental space, utilizing both representation and abstract painting methods. Through her work she references the shifting and overlapping nature of our experience with the sensate and psychological realms; giving form to the complexity, instability, and enigmatic nature of our lived experiences.
Her work has been exhibited nationally throughout the U.S. at Site: Brooklyn in Brooklyn, New York, the Long Beach Island Foundation of the Arts and Sciences, in Long Beach Island, New Jersey, as well as regionally throughout the midwest at Arc Gallery in Chicago, Urban Institute for Contemporary Art in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and the Eli & Edythe Broad Art Museum in East Lansing, Michigan. Somoskey has a solo show forthcoming at Fisher Wall Gallery in Findlay, Ohio, in June 2021. In addition to exhibiting her work, Somoskey has been featured in a variety of publications including ctrl+v journal and Studio Break podcast.
