Doug Scarborough directs Whitman's Jazz Ensemble I, Jazz Combo1, and teaches Applied lessons in trombone, jazz piano, electric bass, as well as courses on jazz theory and history, popular music, songwriting, and the Beatles. As a teacher, his prime directives are guiding and encouraging musical ability, exploring self-expression, and providing opportunities for performances. His goal is to enable students to be the most complete musician possible, recognizing it may look different from person to person.
Some of his personal interests are improvisation, composition, performance, and the intersections of modern jazz, Middle-Eastern music, and the blues. In 2022, he released his fourth CD, The Color of Angels, a fusion of jazz and Middle-Eastern music on Origin Records. A native of the blues-rich Mississippi Delta, Scarborough is equally at home on the trombone, piano, electric bass, or vocals. He has won three DownBeat jazz awards and performed with such luminaries as Arturo Sandoval, Bobby Shew, Benny Golson, Louie Bellson, Kenny Wheeler, Shawn Lane, the Gypsy All-Stars, Brian Lynch, The Motet, and Mountain Heart.
