Sipping, Studying and Soaking in Walla Walla Study Spots

By Bertine Lakjohn

Being lactose-intolerant has basically made coffee a no-go for me, but that won’t stop me from exploring the wonders of studying in Walla Walla coffee shops.

Coffee shops in downtown Walla Walla give a cozy small town vibe you’ve probably seen on TV. All of them are within walking distance from campus and each have their own little unique perk! My top three favorites, fortunately, are all less than five minutes away from each other.

Coffee cup on a desk.

Starbucks is the “most popular” shop to get coffee but people usually order to go. Studying in Starbucks is so peaceful for two reasons. Firstly, the music is really mellow and low. It’s just there as white noise. Secondly, there aren’t very many people who sit down and stay there so those who do get a lot of studying done! The aroma of warm roasted coffee beans bring a “homey” vibe, so inviting—even though I only order the pink drink. I’m lactose-intolerant, remember?

Coffee Perk is next door. The decor and the layout are absolutely adorable! My favorite part is DEFINITELY the baked treats! The breakfast, lunch, and midday snacks are pretty good too. You can easily find solo and group study tables with outlets under each one. Personally, I always choose the table near the big window. When I need a little study break, I sip my tea and look out at people who walk by.

The Colville Street Patisserie is my ultimate favorite study spot. It’s not buzzing with people like the other two can be. I love that they serve coffee, baked goods and ice cream! When the inside gets stuffy, they have tables outside right beside the building. I personally like how it’s out in the open, making it hard for me to sneak in a short Netflix show while studying because I don’t want to be caught being distracted.

Coffee shops are not usually where you’d usually find your lactose-intolerant friend studying but you’ll find me there. The smell of coffee is addicting and makes it such a desirable place for me to study in. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it too!
