Recognition Awards Criteria
One of the most important duties of the Whitman College Alumni Association is to recognize alumni who exemplify outstanding achievement in their careers, communities, or through service to Whitman College. Awards will be presented during Reunion Weekends each year. Tell us about an outstanding Whittie today!
Nominate a worthy candidate...
The Alumni Association Board reserves the right to consider nominees for award categories that may be more fitting. Preference may be given to nominations from Reunion class years. Deadline for nominations: Friday, March 15, 2024.

View this year's award recipients
The Alumni of Merit Award is the highest honor the Alumni Association bestows on an alumnus of Whitman College. This award is given to alumni who have (1) achieved distinction in their chosen field, or (2) rendered outstanding service to their community, or (3) rendered outstanding service to, and demonstrated loyal interest in, Whitman College. Members of the Board of Trustees, the Board of Overseers, and the Board of Directors of the Alumni Association are eligible three years after their last term has been served. The Gordon Scribner Award for Distinguished Service was created to honor Gordon Scribner '42, former dean of students and director of alumni upon his retirement. The award is given by the Alumni Association to persons who have made a major contribution of volunteer time and effort to Whitman College over an extended period of time and possess the ability to inspire. Any alumnus/alumna or friend of the College is eligible for this award. There are no restrictions regarding board involvement. The Pete Reid Award for Young Alumni is given by the Alumni Association to someone whose youthful exuberance is demonstrated toward his or her career, community, and Whitman College as exemplified by Pete Reid '49, in his service to the College. This award is limited to graduates of the last ten years.* Standards for recognition include outstanding recognition in his or her career or field of work or outstanding commitment in service to others, and a demonstrated commitment to Whitman College. * Candidates previously nominated will remain under consideration for a minimum of five years, at which time the Alumni Association reserves the right to remove those nominees or transfer them to another, more appropriate awards category.

The Trailblazer Diversity and Equity Award recognizes alumni striving to light a path for others to follow. Selected jointly by the Office of Diversity & Inclusion and the Alumni Association, this award recognizes alumni whose work exemplifies inclusion, promotes equity, and values and reflects the diversity of our world: gender identity and expression, sexuality, race, ethnicity, national origin, socioeconomic class, disability, religion, spirituality, age cohort, and the infinite other dimensions that intersect to make each person unique.
