Clifford Brown ’72
Clifford Brown, Class of 1972, is originally from Pasco, Washington but now lives in Maryland, near Washington DC. He is a retired attorney and former Senior Foreign Service Officer. He served for some 27 years with the U.S. Agency for International Development, both in DC and at eight overseas posts -- first as regional legal advisor and later in various senior management positions, including as the Country Director in Kyrgyzstan, Guinea and Sierra Leone. In addition to eight years in Africa and Central Asia, he lived and worked in Central and South America for over 16 years. He is professionally fluent in Spanish, French and Russian. Before joining USAID in 1987, he was a partner of Ervin, Cohen & Jessup of Beverly Hills, California where he had practiced commercial law for eleven years. He has a J.D from the UCLA School of Law and was the Managing Editor of the UCLA Law Review in 1975-76. At Whitman, he majored in Economics and was a member of the TKE fraternity. He was one of the first recipients of the Thomas Watson Fellowship and spent his year abroad in Latin America. He hopes to help bolster Whitman’s connections with international educational communities.
