Whitman alumni awarded Fulbright Scholarships

Fulbright logo Five Whitman alumni have been accepted into the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, with another appointed as alternate. They are among the more than 1,200 U.S. citizens selected by Fulbright to teach and conduct research abroad during the 2016-2017 academic year.

In addition, Katie Steen '16 and Clint Vorauer '15 have received scholarships from the Austria Teaching Assistants Program, which is overseen by Fulbright.

This year's Fulbright U.S. Student Program recipients include:

Josephine Adamski '16 (English Teaching Assistantship, Malaysia)
Jeremy Nolan '16 (English Teaching Assistantship, Mexico)
Jacqueline Rees-Mikula '16 (English Teaching Assistantship, Serbia)
Mathias Sanyer '15 (English Teaching Assistantship, Malaysia)
Katie Steen '16 (English Teaching Assistantship, Germany, declined award)
Lizzy Harvey '16 (alternate, English Teaching Assistantship, Argentina)

Established by Congress in 1946 and sponsored by the Department of State, Fulbright operates in over 160 countries worldwide. Grants are awarded on the basis of academic and professional merit as well as a record of service and demonstrated leadership. The program is designed to increase mutual understanding between nations and foster solutions to global challenges.

Whitman is regularly credited as a Fulbright "top producer" due to the volume of students and graduates who apply for and earn scholarships through the program.

"Fulbright keeps upping the ante," said Director of Fellowships and Grants Keith Raether. "This was the third consecutive year that the program saw more than 10,000 applicants. Our group of seven award winners—counting two recipients for the Austria ETA program administered by Fulbright—speaks volumes about the qualifications, achievements and initiative of Whitman's undergraduates and alumni, and their capacity to be cultural ambassadors abroad."

Fulbright is the U.S. government's flagship educational exchange program. Since its inception, it has provided roughly 300,000 students, scholars, teachers, artists and scientists with the opportunity to achieve distinction in their fields of learning through international study. Fulbright alumni are the recipients of 43 Nobel Prizes, 86 Pulitzer Prizes, 28 MacArthur Foundation Awards and 16 U.S. Presidential Medals of Freedom.
