Missy Gerlach '19 was awarded the grand prize in a student video competition hosted by the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Institute for Transportation and Communities.
She submitted the video as part of her Whitman-funded summer internship with Portland's Toole Design Group, a leading planning, engineering and landscape architecture firm specializing in alternate forms of transportation.
Last month, Gerlach attended the screening at a Portland State University summit where she accepted her award, which included a $4,000 cash prize.
Her video was selected by a panel of transportation professionals based on criteria such as creativity and execution, clarity of presentation and emphasis on the relationship between livability and transportation.
In the video, Gerlach explores the role of mass transit, bicycling and walking in the way residents of a community experience their surroundings and navigate their lives, focusing on her own commuting patterns in Portland.
