Sigma Chi Fraternity Hosts Concert Fundraiser in support of Providence St. Mary's
By Samantha Grainger Shuba '16
On Friday Feb. 5, Whitman fraternity Sigma Chi hosted a benefit concert featuring two student bands. Organized by Nick Hochfeld '16, the benefit concert served as a community-building event to raise awareness about the fraternity's annual philanthropy event later this spring. Sigma Chi did not charge an admission fee nor did they require donations. Despite that, the concert raised $250 for Walla Walla's Providence St. Mary's Cancer Research Institute.
"This event was originally not planned to be a philanthropy event," Hochfeld said. "This is merely a precursor to our actual philanthropy event, which will be happening later in the spring."
Featuring his own band The Shop Singers Two and another Whitman student band, Crossing Isaacs, Hochfeld's motives for having the concert had a community-building spirit.
"I've been trying to revitalize the live music scene at Whitman for awhile now," he said. "Now that I've joined a band in Walla Walla and made connections to the music community that way, I thought now would be the perfect time to combine my three passions: music, integrating the Walla Walla community with Whitman, and philanthropy."
