Daphne Gallegos '19 named Newman Civic Fellow

Biology and French major Daphne Gallegos '19 of Pasco, Washington, has earned a prestigious fellowship from Campus Compact. Awarded annually, the Newman Civic Fellowship recognizes recipients' commitment to social change and supports their personal and professional development through trainings, networking events and mentoring.

"Daphne will influence our nation's future in amazing and powerful ways, just as she's already influencing our community and campus today," said Whitman President Kathleen Murray, who nominated her. "Through the kindness and curiosity that she brings to every conversation, Daphne is adept at helping people around her feel included and valued."  

A first-generation college student, Gallegos has served as president of Whitman's First-Generation/Working-Class club, volunteered in local elementary schools and led and participated in five Spring Break Service Trips and Summer Community OutReach Excursions.    

In her personal statement, she wrote: "My parents never failed to remind me that it takes a village to raise a child. A strong appreciation for community was therefore instilled in me very early in my life. Today, I seek to become a part of the communities in which I take up space, through strong direct service and education ... I aim to continue to guide others to find where their passion for leadership lies."  

Two other Whitties have been selected as Newman Civic Fellows since the school became a member of Campus Compact: psychology major Alicia Yan '18 in 2017 and sociology major Katy Woodall '18 in 2016.
