The fall 2019 production "Playing with Fire (After Frankenstein)" reimagined the classic monster tale while showcasing student talent in makeup, acting, set design and lighting.
Written by Barbara Field and directed by Visiting Associate Professor of Theatre and Costume Director Annaliese Baker, the performances ran Oct. 24-27, 2019, on the Alexander Stage in Harper Joy Theatre.
The six-member, gender-blind cast included Rachael Goldsmith Zucker '22, theatre, as Frankenstein; Gillian Mackay Brown '23 as Victor; Beej Haas '20, film and media studies and psychology, as The Creature; Jack Hamilton '23 as Adam; Natalie Traw '23 as Elizabeth; Andrew Yeon '20, computer science, as Professor Krempe; and Ava Wadleigh '23 as the Bride.
Haley King '20, theatre, served as makeup design, and Riley Gavigan '20, theatre, was the lighting designer. King and Gavigan used their work on the show for their senior project.
Additional assistance on the show was provided by guest artists, whom Baker brought in to assist students in technical areas. Ashley Flowers, a props designer and special effects artist, was in residency assisting with makeup design. Sharath Patel worked as sound designer. The college also brought in Alexis Black, a certified intimacy and movement coordinator, to work with the students on the more intimate and physical aspects of the show.
Next up on the Harper Joy Theatre performance schedule is the Fall Dance Concert MMMM, which is set for Nov. 14-17, 2019, in the Freimann Studio Theatre. The concert is directed by Associate Professor Renee Archibald. Dec. 12-15, 2019, Emily Harrison will direct "Ripe Frenzy" on the Alexander Stage.
