Winter Student Art Salon Celebrates 12th Year
By Afrika Brown
On Jan. 19, 2019, the Juried Winter Student Art Salon will celebrate its 12th year with an opening reception from 3-5 p.m. at the Fouts Center for Visual Arts. The salon celebrates student artwork selected to appear in Fouts CVA by a panel of jurors from the studio art faculty.
Last November Kynde Kiefel, exhibitions and collections manager for the Sheehan Gallery, put out the call for students who had taken a studio art class in 2018 to submit up to three works of art for consideration.
The salon officially opened on Jan. 15 and runs until Feb. 13.
Viewers are encouraged to cast a vote for their favorite work of art. The People's Choice winner will receive a prize of $100 at the close of the exhibit.
Selected artwork carries themes ranging from nature to animals, and showcases humor and relational perspectives. "I think the professors' assignments get stronger and stronger and that certainly comes out in the work," Kiefel said.
The first student salon was held in 2007 in one of the art classrooms in Olin East. Over the years the salon has moved from Olin to the Sheehan Gallery, finally settling at Fouts CVA in 2015. The Fouts Center for the Visual Arts is an 8,000-square-foot facility located south of the Reid Campus Center.
The opening celebration is free and open to the public.
