Glover Alston Intercultural Center
2024-2025 Academic Year
Due to accessibility, the GAIC building will temporarily be closed. We anticipate this may last until the end of the 2024-2025 academic year.
As of Wednesday, 10/30/2024, all meetings and events at the GAIC will need to find alternative locations by scheduling with Whitman’s Conference and Events team.
Events that align with the mission and vision of the Third Space Center are welcome to make a reservation online.
Effective, Nov. 4, 2024
Whitman’s Intercultural Center will work out of room 307 in the Hunter Conservatory. An accessible entrance to the building is located on the south end facing the Hall of Music. An elevator is also available at that entrance.
The Director of the Intercultural Center’s office hours are Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Zoom appointments are available on Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The food pantry and clothing closet will be operating out of Reid Campus Center 208 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The lending library will be suspending service during this time.
The Glover Alston Intercultural Center (IC) is a resource to facilitate Whitman’s commitment to sustaining a diverse community. The IC seeks to foster intercultural awareness, inclusiveness and respect for all in the Whitman community. The IC coordinates several equity programs (food pantry, clothing closet, textbook lending library) and works to support students in navigating potential structural barriers to success through individualized guidance and resources. IC programming is created with and for students and the Glover Alston Intercultural Center is a space where all gather to build connections and learn from each other.
A vibrant space for meaningful conversation and interaction, the IC welcomes and supports differences, collaborates with academic departments, encourages input from divergent perspectives, enhances intercultural and international awareness, and models respect for all in the Whitman community. The IC achieves this by serving as:
- A unique place for programs to develop understanding, and community involvement.
- A place where conversations about diversity, difference, multiculturalism and social justice occur.
- A social and academic space for collaboration between members of the Whitman community.
- A meeting place and home for a number of campus organizations and clubs.
- An open space for meditation, contemplation, and reflection.
With this facility, the Whitman community hopes to foster meaningful exchanges between individuals and groups for the greater understanding and mutual respect of one another by encouraging engagement, leadership development and learning.
The Glover Alston Intercultural Center is located near the west side of the campus, at 26 Boyer Ave.
