Alexander Maksik
Alexander Maksik ('95) has won a 2017 Guggenheim award. Xander majored in English at Whitman and went on to write three novels: You Deserve Nothing, A Marker to Measure Drift, and, most recently, Shelter in Place, named one of the best books of the year by The Guardian and The San Francisco Chronicle.
A contributing editor at Condé Nast Traveler, Maksik's writing has appeared, or is forthcoming, in Best American Nonrequired Reading, Harper's, Libération, Tin House, The Sewanee Review, Harvard Review, The New York Times Book Review, The Atlantic, and Narrative Magazine among other publications. His work has been translated into more than a dozen languages.
