Email Listservs (Google Groups)
Whitman College utilizes Google Groups to serve as email listservs for use by students, faculty and students.
Using Google Groups
To manage your Google Groups subscriptions, settings or to find new groups to join, visit groups.google.com and login with your whitman.edu email address.
To join a group you do not currently subscribe to click the name of the group (in the Google Groups interface), then click the “Ask to join group” button.
Once you are subscribed to a Google Group, you may choose from several delivery options (look for the “Subscription” dropdown):
- Each Email - every announcement delivered to your inbox.
- Digest - a daily email that contains multiple announcements in full.
- Abridged - a daily email that includes a summary of messages
- No Email - you can still browse the messages through Google Groups.
To post a message to a Google Group, send an email to groupname@whitman.edu, where groupname is the name of the group you are posting to. For Google Groups that you belong to, you can also compose and send messages directly within the Google Groups app or interface.
Moderated Google Groups
Whitman College manages several email groups (listservs) which are moderated by staff members in the Office of Communications. The primary purpose of these groups is to allow members of the Whitman community to share announcements with each other.
-
Campus Announcements (campus-announcements@whitman.edu)
The Campus Announcements group is for reaching students, faculty and staff with Whitman-specific content, such as events and activities by Whitman departments, offices and Whitman-recognized student clubs. Students, faculty and staff are automatically subscribed to this group, but may choose to unsubscribe at any time. -
Community Announcements (community-announcements@whitman.edu)
The Community Announcements group is for reaching students, faculty and staff with non-Whitman content, such as events and announcements by community groups and organizations, informal employment opportunities (house sitting, pet sitting, odd jobs, etc.) and requests for community recommendations (plumber, landscaper, etc.). Students, faculty and staff are automatically subscribed to this group, but may choose to unsubscribe at any time.
Because these groups are moderated by humans, posts are generally processed every few hours during standard office hours (Monday–Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and less frequently outside of those hours. Posts will never be modified by the moderators. A post will either be approved as is or will be rejected if it is in violation of the moderation policy.
Moderators apply rules equally based on whether the content aligns with the listserv guidelines. Moderators do not discriminate based on the identity of the person or group making the post. The list moderation team can be reached at listmoderator@whitman.edu.
Unmoderated Google Groups
Whitman College maintains several official, open and unmoderated email groups (listservs). Any person with a whitman.edu email address may post to this list, regardless of whether they are a member of the group. Posts to these groups should be limited to the particular focus of that group. Irrelevant posts may result in warnings or loss of access to these groups.
- Forsale (forsale@whitman.edu)
The Forsale group is for buying, selling and trading items. - Lost and Found (lostandfound@whitman.edu)
The Lostandfound group is for sharing information about lost and found items on campus. - Off Campus Housing (offcampushousing@whitman.edu)
The Offcampushousing group is for discussion of off-campus housing needs (property listings, roommate searches, etc.). This group is also open to non-Whitman community members. - Rides (rides@whitman.edu)
The Rides group is for finding or providing rides to and from campus.
Restricted Google Groups
Whitman College maintains several official email groups (listservs) wheraccess to posting is restricted since people do not have the option to unsubscribe.
- Faculty (faculty@whitman.edu)
Posting is restricted to faculty members. The Dean of Faculty can grant permission to post to this group. - Staff (staff@whitman.edu)
Posting is designated for sharing high-level information that is imperative for all staff members to see. - Student Class Year Lists (i.e. Class of 2027)
Posting is restricted to specific individuals who need access to share official Whitman information directly related to their campus job to these groups. Senior administrative officers can grant permission to post to these groups.
Other Google Groups
In addition, any Whitman community member may request a new Google Group. Once Technology Services creates the new (unofficial) group, the new owner of the group may set whatever rules or guidelines they wish or none at all.
