As part of its liberal arts mission, Whitman gives students plenty of time to pick a major. Many have no idea how much they will enjoy certain subjects until they try them. According to Provost and Dean of the Faculty Alzada Tipton, being pushed to declare a major too early can sometimes lead to a situation where “We’re denying some students in the name of academic success the experience of exploration.”
