Associate Professor of Sociology Alissa Cordner Advocates More Medical Screening with PFAS Exposure
For people with elevated exposure to a class of toxic chemicals known as PFAS, commonly found in drinking water as well as consumer products with nonstick, waterproof or stain-resistant properties, medical screenings for conditions associated with PFAS may allow for early identification of indicators of disesase. PFAS exposure is linked to health issues including liver and kidney effects, damage to the immune system, several types of cancer, thyroid effects, reproductive harm, and developmental abnormalities.

Steve Hammond '79 Honors Enslaved Forebears in Historic Visit to Arlington House
The Robert E. Lee Memorial, Arlington House, reopened after an extensive overhaul by the National Park Service. Descendants of both the confederate general and enslaved people who once lived and labored on the estate came together to mark the occasion. "I get emotional talking about it," Hammond said. "It's a very powerful opportunity to bring people together and try to make a difference and a better world."

Brendan Dunlap ’19 Challenges Fashion Gender Binary Through Self-Expression
While still a student at Whitman, he began questioning what felt like the arbitrary division between men's and women's clothing, embracing styles that would traditionally be considered feminine. “I now dress completely for fun,” said Dunlap, who identifies as a queer man and advocates for gender fluidity as part of this year’s Levi’s “All Pronouns All Love” Pride campaign.
