Pre-Registration Information for Continuing Students
Open Pre-Registration
The open pre-registration period begins at 8:00 AM on Thursday, November 14, 2024 and continues through 11:59 PM on Friday, December 20 2024. During open pre-registration, you may add or remove sections from your Spring 2025 schedule, and join the waitlist for sections that are closed, by logging into the Self-Service Student Planning app via myWhitman.
Adding Classes
During open pre-registration, you may add any class you like to your schedule, as long as:
- It has an open seat
- It won't put you over 18 academic credits
- You meet the registration requirements (prerequisites, class year/major restrictions, faculty consent, etc.)
- It doesn't conflict with your other classes
How to Add a Class With Open Seats
1. Make sure you’ve added your desired section to your schedule and it’s showing up as “Planned”.
2. If necessary, contact the instructor to request Faculty Consent and/or a Prerequisite Waiver. (Tip – check the “Consents & Waivers” tab to see your active consents/waivers).
3. Once pre-registration reopens, return to your Spring 2025 schedule and select the blue “Register” button (to register for a single section) or “Register Now” button (to register for all of your planned sections at once).
How to Join the Waitlist for a Class That’s Full
If you want to register for a class that’s already at capacity, you can add yourself to the section’s Waitlist in case any seats open up. Waitlists open at 8:00 AM on Thursday, November 14 2024 and remain open until the pre-registration period ends on Friday, December 20.
1. Make sure you’ve added your desired section to your schedule and it’s showing up as “Planned”. Contact the instructor to secure Faculty Consent and/or Prerequisite Waiver, if necessary.
2. Return to your Spring 2025 schedule and select the blue “Waitlist” button to join the section’s waitlist. Once the waitlist reaches 10 students, no new students may add their names until someone else leaves.
3. If a spot becomes available, you will be notified via your student email.
4. Important! If you’re offered a spot from the waitlist, you must claim your seat by no later than 11:59 PM on the date specified in the email, otherwise the seat will be offered to the next person on the list. To register, log back into the Student Planning app and select the blue “Register” button.
5. If at any time you decide you don’t want to register for the course after all, please select the blue “Drop Waitlist” button to free up your waitlist spot for someone else.
Bypassing the Waitlist or Other Registration Restrictions
At their discretion, faculty may grant students permission to register for a section that’s already full, bypass the waitlist, retake a non-repeatable course, join a course reserved for majors, or join a course that’s not open to their class year. This is done using a Registration Exception. Here’s how it works:
1. Contact the instructor to let them know which section you want to register for and why.
2. If the instructor agrees, they will grant you a Registration Exception and you will receive an email notifying you that you have permission to take the course.
3. Important! If you get an email notifying you that you’ve been granted a Reg Exception, you must follow the instructions in that email to accept the Exception. The course will not be added to your schedule until you do so, and faculty may choose to revoke your Reg Exception if you haven’t yet accepted it.
4. Once you accept your Reg Exception, someone in the Registrar’s Office will add the course to your schedule and send you an email confirming you’re registered.
Dropping Classes
Starting tomorrow morning, if you want to drop a section that you’re pre-registered for, simply find the section in your Course Plan and select the blue “Drop” button.
- Important! Before you drop a section, either make sure you can get into a suitable replacement course or confirm that dropping the course won’t jeopardize your degree progress. If you have any questions, please contact your academic advisor. Once you drop a section from your schedule, there’s no guarantee you’ll be able to get back in if you change your mind.
- There are a couple of classes (GENS-176, RWPD-170) that students are not allowed to drop. If you think you've been placed into one of these sections erroneously, please email the director of that program (First Year Seminars/GENS: Professor Lauren Osborne; RWPD-170: Jenna Terry, Director of Academic Writing Courses).
Helpful Self-Service Hints
If you’re trying to add a class but it’s not working, please refer to the flowchart and FAQ in this document. If that doesn’t answer your question, staff in the Registrar’s Office are available via email, phone, and in person Mondays through Fridays, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM.
- Just because a course is on your schedule/course plan, it does not automatically mean you’re registered!
- Sections on your schedule in Green with a green “Registered, but not started” label mean you’re officially in the class.
- Sections on your schedule in Yellow with a yellow “Planned” label mean the course is in your plan, but you’re not actually enrolled in the class.
- Sections on your schedule that are outlined in Red are closed/waitlisted.
- The “Progress” tab in your Student Planning app takes into account all of the courses on your Course Plan, including ones that are Completed, In-progress, Registered, and Planned. For the most accurate view of your progress toward your degree, you should tidy up your Course Plan by removing any courses from previous semesters that you never actually completed, as well as any from current and future semesters that you don’t intend to actually take.
- When you add new courses to your Course Plan, the Progress tab automatically slots them into the most useful category for your general studies and/or major requirements. If a course can be applied to more than one category, the Progress tab defaults to slotting it into the first category that fits.
