Off-Campus Studies can help Art students …

  • Expand cross-cultural communication and problem-solving skills
  • Develop an awareness of the major discipline from a different scholarly tradition
  • Direct experience of art in different cultures and its social context
  • Develop a global perspective
  • Prepare for an increasingly diverse and international workplace
  • Improve or acquire foreign language skills

How does a semester or year of OCS help students in Art prepare for graduate school or various career opportunities?

  • Exposure to art forms in different societies, including the developing world
  • Programs that offer relevant studio art programs

As a general rule of thumb, the Art Department recommends the following for students who wish to study off campus.

  • Art majors who wish to study abroad need to complete the beginning course in their area of concentration prior to their junior year, because it is not possible to complete both the intermediate and the advanced courses in the area of concentration in the senior year.
  • We recommend that ARTH 203 Critical Art History be taken on the Whitman campus in the first or second year, because it cannot be completed off campus and is a prerequisite for higher numbered art history courses.
  • We prefer that art majors study abroad in the fall instead of the spring semester, as being at Whitman spring semester helps prepare students for their Senior Thesis Seminar courses.
  • Art-Environmental Studies majors should plan to complete ARTS 314 Art and the Anthropocene and ARTH 352 Art/Environment on the Whitman campus, since equivalents for these courses are typically not available elsewhere.

Which requirements can Art majors fulfill while off campus?

  • Specific, equivalent art major requirements

  • General degree credit

  • Programs that offer relevant studio art programs

Which Partner Programs are recommended by the Art department?

Art Majors:

The art department recommends the following programs for studio art majors.  Please note that admission to some programs is quite competitive and requires a portfolio.

  • IFSA: Glasgow School of Art Partnership (Scotland)
  • ILACA: Art Semester at the University of Monterrey (Mexico)
  • IES: Berlin Metropolitan and Urban Studies (Germany)
  • DIS Copenhagen (Denmark)
  • Syracuse University Florence (Italy)

Art-Environmental Studies Majors:

For Art-Environmental Studies majors, students may wish to focus on one aspect of their combined major, or look for programs that will allow them to cover course areas in both. There are some programs recommended by Environmental Studies that overlap with art. Please see Environmental Studies to view a list of recommended programs.

Students interested in Off-Campus Studies should attend an OCS First Step meeting in the fall of their second year, discuss their interests with their major adviser, and schedule an appointment with an OCS adviser.
