Computer Science
CS 167, Introduction to Computational Problem Solving, assumes that students have no prior programming experience.
Students who have completed the Advanced Placement CS A exam with a score of 4 or 5 or another course equivalent will automatically receive credit for CS 167. Such students will be well prepared and supported in 200-level courses such as CS 270: Data Structures, which does not require any specific programming language as a prerequisite.
If you have prior experience with programming or computer science but do not expect to receive AP credit for CS 167, you should complete the CS placement survey to help us determine the best placement for you.
Within one week after completing the survey, a member of the Computer Science department will reach out to confirm your recommended placement or schedule a further conversation. You may contact Computer Science Department Chair Janet Davis <davisj@whitman.edu> with questions at any time. If you should find during the first few days of classes that a different placement would better suit you, you are welcome to change your course registration during the standard add/drop period.
