Off-Campus Student Rental Information
Utilities
Water, sewer, garbage, electricity, and heat are all included in the cost of the rental. However, students are responsible for setting up their own internet through a local internet provider, as well as telephone and cable if desired. Students are responsible for taking their garbage and recycling out to the curb or designated trash areas.
Laundry
Rental units do NOT come with washers and dryers. Some units have washer/dryer hookups and some do not. Please look closely at the rental unit’s information before committing to a space. (If a space is not undergoing renovation, it is possible that washers and dryers may be sold from outgoing students to incoming students. This will be approved on a case by case basis.)
Extra Tenants
Students may request to have one extra student live in a rental beyond the unit’s bed count. This would allow one room in a rental to become a double. These will be approved on a case by case basis depending on the physical layout of the space. Students approved to be roommates in this way will each be charged 75% of the posted per student cost for the rental.
Bedrooms
Students’ primary sleeping space in the rental should be a bedroom. Students are not allowed to live in areas without proper egress, such as unfinished basements or closets.
Air Conditioning
Not all off-campus student rentals have air conditioning. Please refer to the individual listing for more information.
Students in off-campus rentals may bring their own portable air conditioning units. Window AC units are NOT allowed.
Accessibility
Many of the off-campus student rentals are older homes and apartments and unfortunately are not fully accessible. Please see individual listings for more accessibility information. For additional information about accessibility of a specific unit, please contact our office. Additional information about Disability Support Services at Whitman College is also available.
Good Neighbors and City Ordinances
We expect that students are good neighbors to those around them and follow all city ordinances.
This includes City of Walla Walla noise ordinances between the hours of 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. on weekdays and between 10 p.m. and 9 a.m. on weekends.
Other Tenant Responsibilities
Student renters are expected to keep the premises in a clean and sanitary condition. No indoor house furniture (couches, chairs, tables, etc.) can be left in the yard or on the porch for longer than a 24-hour period. Campus maintenance may remove such furniture that is left outside longer than this. If furniture must be removed, EACH student tenant may be charged a minimum $200 furniture disposal fee.
No hot tubs (or similar) can be placed on porches or in yards.
Please note that student renters are responsible for the actions of any of their guests.
As always, students must comply with the Student Rights and Responsibilities in the Student Handbook.
